Staying in Carvoeiro puts you right in the middle of Portugal’s Algarve. The village climbs steeply up the rocky coast, with fantastic sea views from almost everywhere. Carvoeiro itself is tiny, but it sits between some of the most dramatic cliffs and best beaches in the Algarve. In and around the village you’ll find good hotels, apartments and some lovely resorts.
So where’s the best place to stay in Carvoeiro, and which hotels are worth booking? That’s exactly what this guide is for.
Where Is Carvoeiro in Portugal?
Carvoeiro lies on the Algarve coast, in the far south of Portugal. Faro International Airport, where most international flights to the Algarve land, is only a 45-minute drive away.
Thanks to its central spot in the Algarve, Carvoeiro makes a great base for exploring the region. A rental car is the easiest way to get around, and you can pick one up at Faro airport. Not planning to drive? No problem. Carvoeiro has more than enough beaches, cliffs and walks to keep you happy without one.

Why Carvoeiro Is Worth Visiting
Carvoeiro itself is a sweet little village with one of the best-known beaches in the Algarve, a strip of sand tucked between the famous golden cliffs this region is known for. More beaches hide among the rocks around the village. Two to look out for: Praia do Paraíso, reached by a steep white staircase, and the soft sandy beach of Praia de Vale dos Currais.

Right next to Carvoeiro is a unique walk along the iconic orange-red cliffs this coast is famous for: the Carvoeiro Boardwalk. It’s a short 600-metre walk on wooden boardwalks along the cliffs to the impressive rock formations of Algar Seco. The highlight? Two descents where paths and steps have been cut into the orange rock. You duck through little tunnels and archways and climb up and down steps to reach the best spots.
Fancy a longer hike in the Algarve? Then walk the Trail of Headlands, which starts or ends in Carvoeiro depending on your direction. The 6-kilometre route is waymarked with red and yellow signs, but getting lost is pretty hard: you follow the spectacular cliffs the whole way, with sea views almost the entire time. Another stunning hike that starts (or ends) close to Carvoeiro is the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, which also follows the coastline past cliffs, small beaches, rock arches and viewpoints.

Where to Stay in Carvoeiro
A popular spot like Carvoeiro has plenty of good hotels, lovely resorts and friendly B&Bs. The village is so small that many places to stay are on the edge of it or just outside.
There are only a few hotels in the village itself, like Hotel Carvoeiro Plaza near the beach and Mirachoro Carvoeiro a few minutes’ walk away. Most other places to stay are on the edge of Carvoeiro or a little further out. These are usually not small boutique hotels but resorts in every price range, with plenty of facilities. That makes Carvoeiro a great choice for a relaxed holiday in southern Portugal.
