How many days do you need in Budapest?

For a city trip to Budapest, we recommend at least two full days. That gives you enough time to see the main sights on both sides of the Danube, wander through the atmospheric neighbourhoods and take your time in the city’s cafés and restaurants.

With three to five days, you can also visit City Park, Margaret Island and the famous thermal baths without cramming your schedule. Travelling with kids? Then those extra days are especially welcome, as they give you time for the many playgrounds and other kid-friendly spots in Budapest.

This is the historic heart of Pest, with impressive buildings, lively squares and plenty of restaurants and terraces. You’re within walking distance of famous sights like St Stephen’s Basilica, the Hungarian Parliament, the Chain Bridge and the Danube.

The streets around the basilica are great for a wander, while Váci utca is the place for shopping. Thanks to its central location, this area is a great choice for a first visit or a trip with kids. Just keep in mind that it’s one of the most touristy and generally pricier parts of Budapest. Looking for a local vibe and quiet streets? Then there are better options.

The Jewish Quarter might just be the liveliest neighbourhood in Budapest. It’s full of street art, vintage shops, hip restaurants and unusual courtyards. The most famous one is Szimpla Kert, a wild mix of old furniture, art and quirky corners.

During the day, Erzsébetváros is great for wandering and stopping for coffee. In the evening, the nightlife kicks off, especially around Kazinczy utca and Gozsdu Udvar. Thanks to its central location, you can explore much of Budapest on foot. Looking for a lively area full of bars, restaurants and creative hotspots? Then you’re in the right place. For families or light sleepers, though, the busiest nightlife streets might not be the best fit.

#1 Roombach Hotel Budapest Center is a cheerful hotel with colourful rooms, close to the beautiful Rumbach Synagogue. You’re right in the Jewish Quarter, but on a quieter side street, so you’re not in the middle of the busiest bars. A good and fairly affordable choice for a city trip.

At the foot of the hill lies Víziváros, a friendly residential area with restaurants, cafés and views of the illuminated Parliament across the Danube. It’s quieter than central Pest, while the Chain Bridge takes you to the other side of the city in no time. Do keep in mind that from Castle Hill you’ll regularly have to climb a bit or use public transport.
