Malta with Kids? Absolutely! This sun-kissed island is like one big adventure park, packed with fun for the whole family. From colorful movie sets and hidden caves to golden sandy beaches, there’s no shortage of incredible places to explore! Set sail through the magical Blue Grotto, race down the slides at Splash & Fun Water Park, or step into the world of Popeye in his very own village. Hike along the breathtaking cliffs of Għajn Tuffieħa or go underground to uncover Valletta’s secret tunnels. And here’s a fun fact—Malta has its very own Playmobil park! Plus, the island is home to centuries-old salt pans that are still in use today.
One of the best things about Malta and its little sister island, Gozo, is how easy it is to get around. You can drive across the entire island in just 40 minutes, and a quick ferry ride will take you from Malta to Gozo. That means less time on the road and more time to play, explore, and make memories. Whether you’re traveling with curious toddlers, energetic kids, or adventure-seeking teens, there’s something for everyone.
In this blog, we’ll take you through the best activities and must-visit spots to make your family trip to Malta truly unforgettable!

Top Things to Do in Malta and Gozo with kids
#1 Popeye Village
Tucked away on Malta’s northwest coast, Popeye Village is a place where film history meets pure fun. Originally built in 1980 as the set for the Popeye movie starring Robin Williams, this quirky wooden village still leans charmingly against the hills, as if plucked straight from the pages of a storybook. Today, it’s a vibrant theme park where kids can play, explore, and step into the whimsical world of Popeye.
From the moment you arrive, you’ll be surrounded by the magic of the film. Costumed characters bring scenes to life, putting on lively performances and interacting with visitors. Kids can go on treasure hunts, bounce on inflatable castles, or splash around in a mini water park by the sea. On warm summer days, a floating platform invites brave swimmers to dive into the crystal-clear waters of Anchor Bay. Inside the village, you can peek behind the scenes to see how the movie was made and even star in your own mini-film!
While Popeye Village is a dream come true for young children, older kids and movie buffs will also find plenty to enjoy. Open year-round and located near Mellieħa, this one-of-a-kind attraction is a must-visit for families looking to add a touch of Hollywood magic to their Malta adventure.

#2 Marsaxlokk Fish Market
Marsaxlokk is Malta’s quintessential fishing village, where time seems to slow down and tradition is still very much alive. The small harbor is filled with luzzu boats—traditional Maltese fishing vessels painted in bold, cheerful colors, each with a pair of mystical eyes on the bow. This ancient Phoenician tradition is believed to protect fishermen from harm at sea, adding to the village’s rich cultural heritage.
On Sunday mornings, Marsaxlokk bursts into life as the famous fish market takes over the waterfront. Stalls brim with the day’s fresh catch—glistening fish, crabs, shrimp, and squid—while the scent of the sea mingles with the lively chatter of locals and visitors. Children will be mesmerized watching fishermen expertly clean and fillet their haul right before their eyes, skillfully negotiating prices with eager buyers. But the market isn’t just about seafood—you’ll also find local honey, fragrant herbs, and traditional Maltese nougat, perfect for a sweet treat to take home.
During the week, the village takes on a much more relaxed vibe, making it a lovely place for a peaceful stroll along the waterfront. With plenty of seaside restaurants serving the freshest catch of the day, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely meal while soaking in the laid-back atmosphere. Just a 30-minute drive from Valletta and easily reached by bus, Marsaxlokk is a must-visit for those looking to experience authentic Maltese charm. And if you’re visiting with kids, don’t miss the nearby St. Peter’s Pool—a breathtaking natural swimming spot where the whole family can enjoy a refreshing dip in crystal-clear waters.

#3 Splash & Fun Water Park
When the Maltese sun is shining at full force and the temperatures climb, Splash & Fun Water Park is the ultimate place to cool off. Perched right by the sea, this vibrant water park promises a day packed with excitement, adventure, and refreshing splashes. Kids can zoom down thrilling slides, drift effortlessly along the lazy river, or brave the rolling waves in the wave pool—there’s no shortage of fun here.
For thrill-seekers, the Black Hole is an absolute must. This high-speed, pitch-dark tunnel slide sends riders hurtling down at exhilarating speeds, making it a favorite among older kids and daring adults alike. Meanwhile, little ones have their very own splash zone, complete with mini slides, bubbling fountains, and shallow pools, ensuring that even the tiniest visitors have a blast. When it’s time to take a breather, the spacious grassy area with sun loungers provides the perfect spot to relax and recharge. And when hunger strikes, the park’s restaurants and snack bars have you covered, serving up everything from freshly baked pizza and juicy seasonal fruit to indulgent ice cream treats.
Open daily from May to October, Splash & Fun Water Park is located in Bahar ic-Caghaq, just a 15-minute drive from Valletta, with buses stopping conveniently right at the entrance. Before you head home, take a short stroll to the coast behind the park—you’ll discover ancient salt pans, a breathtakingly photogenic landscape. Our kids absolutely loved hopping from pool to pool, balancing along the edges, and exploring every little nook. It’s the perfect way to end an unforgettable day of water-filled fun!
#4 Esplora Interactive Science Centre
Esplora is no ordinary museum—here, curiosity reigns, and touching is not only allowed but encouraged! This interactive science center in Kalkara is a playground for the mind, packed with exciting experiments and hands-on activities that bring science to life in the most engaging way.
Have you ever wondered how to build a house that can withstand an earthquake? Or what happens when you fill a balloon with hydrogen? At Esplora, kids don’t just learn about these concepts—they get to test them firsthand. The absolute showstopper is the planetarium, where a massive domed screen whisks visitors away on a breathtaking journey through space. Outside, a large playground and a terrace with stunning views over the Grand Harbour offer the perfect spots to unwind and soak in the scenery.
Set within a beautifully restored 19th-century hospital, Esplora Interactive Science Centre opened as a science museum in 2016 and has since become one of Malta’s top family-friendly attractions. Designed for children aged three and up, it’s a fantastic place to escape the heat in summer or enjoy an indoor adventure on a rainy day. Just 10 minutes from Valletta, the museum is easily accessible by bus or ferry to Bormla. And while you’re here, take the time to explore the historic Three Cities—one of Malta’s most breathtaking and fascinating destinations, just a stone’s throw away.
#5 St. Peter’s Pool & Camel Rock
St. Peter’s Pool is one of those places that instantly makes you want to dive into the water. This natural swimming spot, tucked away among the rocks on Malta’s southern coast, is famous for its crystal-clear, turquoise waters that shimmer invitingly under the sun.
The rocky plateaus surrounding the bay are perfect for sunbathing and, for the more adventurous, make excellent diving platforms. Children who love swimming and snorkeling will be in their element here. However, be mindful—there’s no sandy beach, and the water gets deep right away. That makes it less suitable for little ones, but older children and teenagers will find it absolutely thrilling.
Not far from the pool, you’ll find Camel Rock, a striking rock formation that, with a little imagination, resembles a kneeling camel. A short walk will take you there, and this spot is particularly well-suited for young children. A natural rock barrier has created a shallow pool, forming the perfect paddling area for toddlers to splash around safely.
Keep in mind that there are no sun loungers, restaurants, or showers, so be sure to bring your own food, drinks, and some shade. St. Peter’s Pool is accessible via a narrow road from Marsaxlokk, where you’ll find a small parking area nearby.

#6 Blue Grotto
The Blue Grotto is one of Malta’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Nestled along the island’s southwest coast, this mesmerizing cave system is famous for its dazzling blue waters, which glow in shifting shades as sunlight dances through the entrance. From a scenic clifftop viewpoint, you can soak in panoramic views of the dramatic rock formations rising from the sea.
To truly experience the magic of the caves, you’ll need to take to the water. Local fishermen run short boat trips that weave through six different caves, each with its own unique charm. Children are often spellbound by the way the colors change with the movement of light, creating an almost otherworldly spectacle. For those seeking more adventure, the crystal-clear waters around the grotto offer fantastic snorkeling and diving opportunities.
The Blue Grotto owes its name to a British officer in the 19th century, who was reminded of the famous Grotta Azzurra in Capri. The caves lie just outside the quaint village of Wied iż-Żurrieq, about a 20-minute drive from Valletta. Perched on the cliffs above, a viewpoint offers a spectacular glimpse of the grotto and the vast Mediterranean stretching beyond. To make the most of your visit, consider pairing it with a trip to the nearby Ħaġar Qim temple, a fascinating relic of Malta’s prehistoric past.

#7 Blue Lagoon on Comino
The Blue Lagoon on Comino looks like something straight out of a postcard. Tucked between Malta and Gozo, this little paradise is famous for its unbelievably clear waters, shimmering in shades of turquoise and sapphire. It’s the perfect place to swim, snorkel, or simply wade through the shallow, sunlit sea. For young children, the calm waters near the shore are ideal for splashing and playing, while older kids can venture further into the lagoon or even take an exhilarating leap from the rocks into the deeper water.
In the summer, the Blue Lagoon gets busy, especially around midday. Want to beat the crowds? Hop on an early boat and claim a peaceful spot on one of the smaller beaches nearby. Since Comino has no hotels and only a handful of snack stalls, it’s best to bring plenty of food and drinks. Boats run daily from various harbors on both Malta and Gozo, with the scenic journey taking between 20 and 30 minutes.

#8 Playmobil Fun Park
In Malta, not only do vacation dreams come true, but so do Playmobil dreams! The island is home to one of the world’s largest Playmobil factories, and right next to it lies the Playmobil Fun Park—a magical playground where young adventurers can step into the world of their favorite toys.
Here, children can dive into themed play areas filled with pirates, knights, and fairies, or get creative by building with giant Playmobil figures. Outside, a spacious playground invites little explorers to climb, slide, and run around, while indoors, they can lose themselves in a world of Playmobil sets, playing for hours on end. You might still see some travel guides mentioning a factory tour, which used to be a popular part of the experience. Sadly, the tour is no longer available, but the park itself is packed with enough excitement to keep kids entertained for hours.
This is a fantastic option for a day when the weather isn’t perfect, and the park is just the right size—big enough to keep children engaged but small enough to explore without feeling overwhelmed. There’s also a café where you can grab a snack and a drink. Best of all, Playmobil Fun Park is just a 20-minute drive from Valletta, and we were pleasantly surprised by how budget-friendly the entrance fee was.

#9 Golden Bay
Golden Bay is one of those beaches that immediately makes you feel like you’re on holiday. With its wide stretch of soft, golden sand, sparkling blue waters, and plenty of space to swim, play, and soak up the sun, it’s the perfect place to unwind by the sea.
Little ones can spend hours building sandcastles, while older kids and thrill-seekers can go snorkeling, kayaking, or even hop on an exciting banana boat ride. The water remains shallow for quite a distance, making it a safe and inviting spot for younger swimmers. Surrounded by towering cliffs, the bay offers spectacular views. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available for rent, and a few beach cafés offer refreshing drinks, ice cream, and light snacks.
Golden Bay is a popular summer destination, so if you want to secure the perfect spot, it’s best to arrive early. Located in northwest Malta, near Mellieħa, the beach is easily accessible, with a large parking area and bus stops conveniently close to the entrance.

#10 Ramla Bay (Gozo)
Ramla Bay on Gozo is anything but an ordinary beach. The first thing that catches your eye is its striking red-gold sand, which glows warmly under the sun and contrasts beautifully with the vivid blue sea. This wide, unspoiled stretch of coastline is perfect for families, with plenty of space to run, play, and swim. The water deepens a little faster than at Golden Bay, but it remains safe for children. There are a few small stalls selling snacks and drinks, but you won’t find large resorts or bustling crowds here—just a peaceful, natural paradise that still feels like a hidden gem.
Perched high on the cliffs above the bay is the legendary Calypso Cave, said to be the very grotto where the nymph Calypso held Odysseus captive for seven years in Homer’s Odyssey. While the cave itself is no longer accessible, the sweeping view over the bay is absolutely worth the climb. If you’re looking for an even more breathtaking vantage point, head to Tal-Mixta Cave. A short descent down a staircase takes you into the cavern, and as you step inside, you’re greeted by a stunning natural window that perfectly frames Ramla Bay below—a view that feels straight out of a postcard.
Nestled on Gozo’s northern coast, Ramla Bay is easy to reach by bus or car from the Mgarr ferry terminal, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring the island.

#11 Sant’Antnin Family Park
Not in the mood for sand and sea? Sant’Antnin Family Park offers a fantastic alternative. As the largest recreational park in Malta, it’s the perfect place for a fun and relaxing day with the kids. The park boasts multiple spacious playgrounds with slides and climbing frames, a charming petting zoo with goats and rabbits, and even a skatepark and sports fields for older children looking for more action.
Completely car-free, the park allows kids to run, explore, and play safely. There are plenty of picnic tables and shaded spots where you can sit back and unwind, making it an ideal setting for a laid-back afternoon. In summer, the park often hosts exciting activities and workshops to keep little ones entertained.
Nestled in Marsaskala, a small coastal town just 30 minutes from Valletta, the park is easy to reach by car or bus. Best of all, entry is completely free, and there’s a convenient parking area on-site. If you’re visiting Marsaskala, we highly recommend stopping by Jacob’s Brew for a kid-friendly lunch or a classic English tea. The café offers board games for young visitors, and the friendly staff go out of their way to make children feel welcome—a lovely way to end your day.

#12 High Tea at Carolina’s in Sliema
Sometimes, you just crave something different—no pizza, no pasta, but a luxurious high tea with all the elegance and charm. At Carolina’s Petit Café in Sliema, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into a classic English tearoom. Picture delicate tiered trays filled with warm, buttery scones topped with clotted cream, dainty finger sandwiches, and beautifully crafted pastries. Everything is served on vintage floral china, in a setting that feels straight out of a storybook—with antique furniture, soft pink walls, and a cozy, old-world atmosphere.
This hidden gem offers the perfect retreat from Sliema’s lively streets—a place to slow down and savor the moment. If a full high tea feels like too much, you can always opt for a cream tea, as I did on a mother-son date. A steaming pot of tea, paired with three scones generously spread with clotted cream and jam, was more than enough for my little one and me to share.
Carolina’s sits right along Sliema’s seafront promenade, making it a delightful spot to soak in the surroundings. Inside, the pastel pink seating adds to the charm, but for us, the highlight was the outdoor terrace, where we could enjoy our tea with a view of the harbor. Afterward, you can take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront or hop on the ferry to Valletta for a picture-perfect end to your outing.

#13 Valletta Underground
Hidden beneath Valletta’s bustling streets lies a secret world filled with history and intrigue. The Valletta Underground is a labyrinth of tunnels and shelters, some dating back to the 16th century. Originally constructed by the Knights of the Order of Malta, these passageways took on a vital role during World War II, offering protection to thousands of Maltese civilians as relentless air raids battered the city.
A guided tour leads you through these dimly lit, mysterious corridors, past rooms where the wounded were once cared for and families sought safety in the darkness. For children, it’s an adventure unlike any other—ducking under low ceilings, peering into hidden alcoves, and hearing gripping stories of knights, war, and survival. The underground’s naturally cool temperature also makes it a refreshing escape from the island’s heat.
Conveniently located in the heart of Valletta, the entrance is easy to find, and tours run multiple times a day. While younger children might find the tunnels a bit dark and enclosed, older kids and teens will be fascinated by this immersive journey into Malta’s past..
#14 Ta’ Qali Adventure Park
Not far from the old airfield in Ta’ Qali, you’ll find a sprawling adventure park where kids can climb, swing, and explore to their heart’s content. Ta’ Qali Adventure Park is so much more than just a playground—it’s an outdoor wonderland packed with climbing walls, zip lines, and tunnels to crawl through. There’s a special play area for toddlers, complete with swings and slides, while older children can take on exciting climbing structures and obstacle courses. With wide-open grassy fields and plenty of picnic areas, it’s the perfect spot for a fun-filled family day out.
Ta’ Qali is known for its fresh air and lush greenery, making it a welcome escape from Malta’s lively coastal towns. Just a short stroll from the park, you’ll find the Ta’ Qali Artisan Market, where you can browse local crafts and unique handmade souvenirs. Best of all, entry to the park is completely free. It’s just a 20-minute drive from Valletta, with ample parking and easy access by bus.
#15Kids-proof Hike to St. Paul’s Hermit Chapel
Hiking with kids isn’t always easy, but the trail to St. Paul’s Hermit Chapel is an adventure tailor-made for little explorers. This short, family-friendly walk leads to an extraordinary chapel carved directly into the cliffs. According to legend, a hermit lived here in the 17th century, dedicating his days to prayer and meditation.
Though the hike is relatively short, it’s packed with breathtaking scenery. Along the way, you’ll pass dramatic rock formations, walk beneath a natural stone arch, and take in sweeping coastal views. Every turn in the path reveals something new, making it just as exciting for kids as it is for adults. The chapel itself is modest and unadorned, but its unique setting perched against the rock face makes it an unforgettable sight.
The trail begins in the village of Mosta and is easy to navigate. Our toddler and preschooler were absolutely thrilled by the adventure! Just be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, as there are no facilities along the way.

#16 Bugibba Splash Park
When the sun is blazing and the kids are craving a splash, Bugibba Splash Park is the perfect place to cool off. This free water park, set right on the Bugibba promenade, is designed especially for young children and guarantees hours of refreshing fun.
Instead of deep pools, the park is filled with fountains, water cannons, and sprinklers that invite little ones to run, jump, and play. The entire area is shallow and completely safe, making it ideal for toddlers and preschoolers. Older kids will love the interactive water games and the giant tipping bucket that soaks everyone in its path every few minutes. Parents can unwind on shaded benches surrounding the play area, keeping a close eye on their little adventurers while enjoying the sea breeze.
The splash park is open from May to October and operates with timed entry slots to keep it from getting too crowded. No reservations are needed, but during peak season, arriving early is a smart move. Located on Malta’s northern coast, Bugibba is easy to reach by bus.
#17 Għar Dalam Cave
Step into the depths of time and uncover the ancient wonders of Għar Dalam, Malta’s oldest cave. This isn’t just any underground tunnel—it’s a prehistoric vault filled with secrets from a world long forgotten. Fossils of dwarf elephants and hippos have been unearthed here, revealing a time when these incredible creatures roamed Malta. Yes, you read that right—there were once elephants on this tiny Mediterranean island!
But the cave’s mysteries go even deeper. It holds Malta’s oldest human remains, dating back over 7,000 years. Children and adults alike will be captivated by the glass cases showcasing ancient fossils, while the softly lit cave creates an air of adventure and discovery.
Nestled in Birżebbuġa in southern Malta, Għar Dalam is easy to reach by car or bus. Be sure to bring a light jacket, as the cave stays refreshingly cool year-round. A visit takes about an hour—just the right amount of time to uncover the past before heading off to explore more of Malta or relax on a nearby beach.
#18 Boat Tour of the Grand Harbour
A regular stroll through Valletta? That’s just the beginning! For a far more exciting way to experience the city and its breathtaking harbor, take to the water. Step aboard a boat and cruise past towering fortress walls, centuries-old forts, and historic shipyards as you glide through the legendary Grand Harbour. This stunning natural harbor has witnessed some of Malta’s most dramatic moments, from the era of the Knights of St. John to the fierce bombings of World War II.
For kids, it’s an adventure straight out of a storybook. They’ll be mesmerized by massive cruise ships up close, peek into mysterious tunnels carved into the cliffs, and listen to thrilling tales of pirates and epic sea battles. There are plenty of boat tours to choose from, whether you prefer the charm of a traditional dgħajsa (a Maltese gondola) or a larger sightseeing boat with a knowledgeable guide. Most tours depart from Valletta and last about an hour—just the right amount of time to sit back, soak in the views, and let history come to life before your eyes!

#19 Gondola between Valletta and the Three Cities
Why take the bus when you can glide across the harbor in a piece of living history? The dgħajsa is a traditional Maltese rowing boat that once ferried sailors and merchants across the Grand Harbour. Today, it still offers a one-of-a-kind way to travel between Valletta and the Three Cities—just as people did centuries ago.
The crossing itself is short, but the experience is unforgettable. As you drift past the massive stone fortifications of the Grand Harbour, you’ll be treated to stunning views of Valletta’s skyline from the water. The boatmen—often seasoned locals with decades of seafaring stories—are always happy to share fascinating tales about the harbor’s past. For kids, it’s a thrilling little voyage that feels like a step back in time—far more exciting than a standard ferry ride!
You’ll find the dgħajsa boats docked near the Barrakka Lift, which takes you straight from the Upper Barrakka Gardens down to the waterfront. A one-way trip costs just €3 per person. Once you reach the other side, take the opportunity to wander through the Three Cities—a beautifully preserved trio of historic towns, each brimming with charm, character, and hidden corners waiting to be explored.

#20 Cannon shots at Upper Barrakka Gardens
BOOM! At exactly 12:00 and 16:00, a thunderous explosion shakes the air above the Grand Harbour. But this isn’t a fireworks display—it’s a centuries-old tradition brought to life every day at the Upper Barrakka Gardens.
The Saluting Battery was built in the 16th century by the Knights of Malta and later taken over by the British, who used its powerful cannons to greet arriving ships and ward off enemies. Today, the ritual is carefully preserved by volunteers in historical uniforms, who load and fire the cannons with military precision. Kids will be on the edge of their seats as the gunners prepare for the big moment—then BANG! A deafening blast, a cloud of smoke, and the echo rolling across the harbor.
Beyond the excitement, the gardens themselves are a must-visit. Perched high above Valletta, they offer one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Malta, stretching across the shimmering waters of the Grand Harbour. If you want the best vantage point for the show, be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes early!
Tip: Pick up some Maltese pastizzi—crispy pastries stuffed with ricotta or spiced pea puree—and enjoy a laid-back picnic in the gardens while you wait. Our little globetrotters gave this plan an enthusiastic two thumbs up!

#21 Hike at Għajn Tuffieħa
If you’re looking for a short but stunning hike, the trail at Għajn Tuffieħa is an absolute must. The route starts at the top of the stairs near the parking lot and swings of Għajn Tuffieħa, leading you along dramatic cliffs with breathtaking views over the coastline. As you make your way toward a rugged peninsula, the scenery just keeps getting better—think towering cliffs, two dazzling blue bays, and striking rock formations jutting out into the sea!
Kids will love dashing along the winding trails and clambering over the rocks. The hike itself isn’t too strenuous, but if you’re feeling adventurous, you can extend the journey by exploring the rocky outcrop for an extra thrill. Our little ones were too small for this part, so we took turns tackling it. Along the way, we passed families with teenagers, who were clearly enjoying the challenge—there’s plenty of climbing involved, making it a great trek for older kids!
Once you’ve had your fill of hiking, a beautiful stretch of golden sand awaits below, perfect for cooling off with a refreshing swim. Għajn Tuffieħa Beach is quieter than the more famous Golden Bay, giving it a hidden-paradise feel. There’s a small beach bar, but few other facilities, so be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks. The perfect combination of adventure and relaxation!

#22 Malta National Aquarium
Dive into a mesmerizing underwater world teeming with sharks, stingrays, and dazzling tropical fish. The Malta National Aquarium in Qawra may not be the largest, but it’s certainly one of the most captivating. The undisputed highlight? The breathtaking underwater tunnel, where sharks and giant rays glide effortlessly above your head, giving you the feeling of walking beneath the ocean.
We don’t usually feature animal attractions in our blogs, but the Malta National Aquarium is simply too special to leave out. This modern aquarium offers a unique window into the marine life surrounding Malta. Little explorers will love the interactive touch pools, where they can gently feel sea urchins and tiny crabs, while history lovers can dive into the fascinating exhibits on shipwrecks and hidden underwater caves that reveal Malta’s deep-rooted maritime past.
Outside, you’ll find a playground and a spacious terrace with stunning sea views—an ideal spot to relax with an ice cream. Whether you’re looking for a rainy-day activity or a refreshing break from the sun, this aquarium is a fantastic choice. Just a 30-minute drive from Valletta, it’s also easily accessible by bus.
Are your kids animal lovers? Then be sure to check out BirdPark Malta and Mediterraneo Marine Park for even more wildlife encounters!
#23 Fort St. Elmo
Clashing swords, thunderous cannons, and heroic tales—Fort St. Elmo is where history comes alive. Standing proudly at the edge of Valletta, this formidable fortress played a crucial role in the Great Siege of 1565, when the Knights of Malta fiercely defended the island against the Ottoman Empire. Today, it serves as a captivating museum, immersing visitors in Malta’s military history, from medieval warfare to the battles of World War II.
For kids, it’s like stepping into a real-life adventure—towering stone walls, watchtowers with sweeping views, and exhibitions showcasing ancient weapons, shining armor, and historic uniforms. On Sundays, the excitement reaches another level with live re-enactments, as actors in full knightly gear recreate dramatic moments from the past.
From the ramparts, you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramas of Valletta and the Grand Harbour. Best of all, Fort St. Elmo is just a short stroll from the city center, making it an effortless yet unforgettable stop on any Valletta itinerary.
#24 Xwejni Salt Pans
Harvesting salt from seawater might not sound like the most thrilling activity—until you set eyes on the Xwejni Salt Pans in Gozo. Sprawled along the coastline like an enormous checkerboard, these centuries-old salt pans have been used for generations to produce Malta’s pure sea salt. Visit in the summer, and you’ll see locals carefully scooping up the salt by hand, leaving it to dry under the blazing Mediterranean sun.
For kids, it’s a fascinating process—watching something as simple as seawater transform into shimmering white crystals. While the historic salt pans themselves are off-limits for walking, just a short stroll along the coast, you’ll find more that you can explore freely. Nearby, you’ll also come across Qolla l-Bajda Battery, an 18th-century fort built by the Knights of St. John to guard the coastline. Around the fort, more salt pans dot the landscape, and here, you can wander as you please.
Looking for a unique souvenir? You can buy a bag of pure Maltese sea salt, sold directly by the very people who harvest it. And the setting couldn’t be more stunning—rugged rock formations, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes you want to linger. Xwejni is just a short drive from the village of Marsalforn and can easily be reached by car or bus from Victoria.

#25 Ħaġar Qim
Malta’s Ħaġar Qim is a place where history feels almost magical—a breathtaking prehistoric temple that sparks curiosity in visitors of all ages. Dating back to around 3,600 BC, these ancient ruins are older than Stonehenge and even the pyramids of Egypt! That alone is astonishing. But what makes this site truly mind-blowing is the sheer size of the stones—some weighing over twenty tons, stacked together by people who had no modern tools or machinery. How they managed it remains one of history’s great mysteries.
For children, Ħaġar Qim is like stepping into a real-life adventure. They can wander through narrow passageways, hidden chambers, and marvel at the massive round stones that may have once served as ancient doors. To protect these remarkable structures, both temples are now sheltered under large, tent-like canopies—something that completely fascinated our toddler. The visitor center makes the experience even more engaging with interactive displays and a 4D film that brings the temples to life. Our kids were mesmerized, and our toddler loved it so much she wanted to watch it twice!
The location is just as spectacular. Perched on a hill, Ħaġar Qim offers sweeping views over the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, adding to the sense of wonder. After exploring the temple, we followed a scenic path leading down to dramatic coastal rock arches—a walk we’d highly recommend! Situated in southern Malta, just a short distance from the Blue Grotto, this site is easy to reach by car or bus. It’s an absolute must-see, especially for young explorers and budding archaeologists!

Soft Sand & Safe Swimming
While many of Malta’s beaches are rocky, the sandy shores that do exist are absolutely perfect for families. Golden Bay and Mellieħa Bay stand out as top choices, with their soft golden sand, shallow waters, and plenty of space for little ones to build the ultimate sandcastle. Mellieħa Bay slopes gently into the sea, making it ideal for toddlers who love to splash around. Plus, with restrooms, restaurants, and sunbed rentals nearby, a hassle-free beach day is guaranteed.
Playful Attractions & Interactive Learning
A theme park dedicated to Playmobil? Yes, it’s real! At the Playmobil FunPark, kids can build, play, and even get a behind-the-scenes look at how their favorite toys are made. For young scientists, Esplora is an interactive science center filled with hands-on exhibits and a planetarium that takes them on a journey through space. And for little marine explorers, the Malta National Aquarium offers the chance to watch sharks and stingrays glide right above their heads!
History—But Make It Fun!
Malta’s rich history isn’t just for grown-ups—it’s brought to life in ways that make it exciting for kids, too! The medieval city of Mdina feels like a real-life fairy tale, with winding streets that are perfect for little adventurers to explore. And for an unforgettable moment, head to the Saluting Battery, where you can witness an authentic cannon firing every single day!

One of the best things about Malta? Everything is within easy reach! No endless car rides—most places can be reached in 30 minutes or less. The public buses are budget-friendly and connect all major sights. Prefer the freedom of your own car? Rental cars are available, but keep in mind that driving is on the left side! While some roads can be a bit bumpy, the short travel distances mean you won’t have to hear “Are we there yet?” on repeat.
