Gozo truly took us by surprise. We thought we were heading to a small, quiet island, but what we discovered was so much more. Gozo is wilder, greener, and far more impressive than we ever expected. The natural beauty is untouched, the views are nothing short of spectacular, and the vibe is completely different from Malta. It’s quieter, more authentic, and feels almost suspended in time.
What immediately strikes you is the sense of space. There are no crowded streets packed with tourists or long queues at attractions. Instead, quiet roads meander through rolling hills and valleys, passing old farmhouses and peaceful villages where life feels like it’s moving at a different pace. The coastline is breathtaking: towering cliffs, hidden coves, and some of the clearest water you’ll ever see. Wied il-Għasri, a narrow gorge that leads to a secret swimming cove, feels like a hidden gem waiting to be explored. The rugged Sanap Cliffs make you feel as if you’re standing on the edge of the world. Then there’s Ramla Bay, with its striking red sand – a beach unlike any other.
And that’s just the island’s natural beauty. Gozo’s history is equally captivating. The Ġgantija Temples, older than the pyramids of Egypt, leave you in awe, wondering how ancient people managed to move such massive stones. In Victoria, the Citadel towers over the island, with its winding streets and viewpoints offering panoramic views that stretch for miles. One thing we definitely underestimated was just how much there is to do. Everywhere we read that a day trip would be enough, but honestly? Gozo deserves so much more time. There are so many beautiful places to visit on Gozo, each more incredible than the last! You can hike along deserted cliffs, snorkel in the stunning Blue Hole, kayak along the breathtaking coastline, or simply get lost in the charm of quiet villages, wandering for hours. We ended up staying for a week, and honestly, we could have easily stayed even longer.
How to Get to Gozo and Get Around?
Getting to Gozo from Malta is a breeze with the ferry service. Departing every half hour from Ċirkewwa in the north of Malta, the ferry takes just 25 minutes to reach the harbor at Mġarr. You can either walk on or bring your rental car along for the ride. Don’t worry about buying your ticket upfront – you only need to pay when you’re returning to Malta.
If you’re in a hurry, there’s also a fast ferry from the capital, Valletta, which gets you to Gozo in under 45 minutes. This option saves you the time and hassle of driving to the northern port or taking a bus to catch the ferry.
Once you arrive on Gozo, you have a few great ways to explore the island. Renting a car gives you the freedom to go wherever you like, but keep in mind that there’s an additional ferry ticket to bring it on the ferry. From our experience, the roads on Gozo are a little rougher than those on Malta, so it’s worth being prepared for a slightly bumpier ride. No car? Taxis and Bolt (the local Uber service) are handy alternatives, giving you flexibility to explore. Just be aware that they can get expensive if you plan to visit multiple spots in one day.
For those on a budget, public transport is a great option. The regular bus service can take you to nearly every corner of the island. If you’re trying to see as much as possible in one day, especially if you’re visiting Gozo on a day trip from Malta, the tourist buses are a good choice. While we’re usually not huge fans of hop-on-hop-off buses, on Gozo, they’re a convenient way to hit all the major sights in a short time. The bus follows a sensible route, taking you to the island’s most popular attractions, such as the Citadel, the Ġgantija Temples, Xlendi Bay, and Ramla Bay. It’s perfect if you don’t have your own transportation but still want to make the most of your time without any stress.
Looking for a bit of adventure? Rent a buggy or quad and explore Gozo at your own pace. The distances are short, and it’s an amazing way to navigate the island’s scenic hills, hopping between picturesque villages and stunning bays.
How Much Time Do You Need on Gozo?

If you’ve got three days or more, that’s when you can really start to connect with the rhythm of Gozo.
