Off the grid eco cabanas in Bacalar with Airbnb
We stayed in this Airbnb at Bacalar. We booked a stunning off the grid ecocabana right on the lake. The huts are located in the far north of the lake, so about a 35-minute drive from the town of Bacalar.
The location on the lake was beautiful. Our sunrise photos in this blog were all taken there. There are canoes and kayaks to rent and paddle out to the mangrove forest or watch the sunrise from the water (150 pesos p.p. for use during your entire stay). Since there is no city light in this area, the starry sky is just beautiful.
A big disadvantage of this unique Airbnb location is the distance to the town of Bacalar. The high price of the (vegetarian) food in the small restaurant of the owner was a big high (180 pesos for breakfast, 200 for lunch and 250 for dinner), so we drove our rental car a few times to Pueblo Bacalar to have some food. But not just to grab a bite, also to enjoy and explore this charming town.

It’s also good to know that the waterfront cabanas are off the grid, so don’t expect anything fancy. Our cabin had a small bed with mosquito net and a basic bathroom with a cold water shower. We loved that back to basics vibe, but you might be looking for a bit more luxury and comfort.
