Durrës in Albania is a top beach destination. Miles of beaches extend south from the city. Although the center is known for its unattractive high-rise buildings, we believe the city itself is worth visiting along with the beaches. To assist you during your stay in this coastal resort, we have compiled a list of the 10 best sights in Durrës along with practical tips.
How to get to Durrës in Albania
Durrës is a seaside resort located on the northern coast of Albania, not far from the capital, Tirana. The distance between Durrës and Tirana can be covered in less than 45 minutes.
Durrës is the second largest city in the country after Tirana and was the capital for some time. Today, it serves as a significant port city. Additionally, Durrës offers ferry services to Italy. It is important to note that the city center and beaches are divided by the port, making it impossible to walk directly between them.
If you are traveling with a car, it’s useful to know that you can park for free at this parking lot on the boulevard, located just behind the KFC.
Where to stay in Durres
You can stay in Durrës either at the beaches or in the center. The two areas are separated by the large port of Durrës, so it’s advisable to choose between the beach or the center. We would opt for a pleasant beach hotel. Most of the hotels in Durrës are located there and while the center of Durrës is worth visiting, the beaches are the primary attraction of the city.
It’s also good to note that Albania generally offers very reasonable prices. This means you have the opportunity to stay in a fantastic luxury hotel for the same price—or even less—than what you would typically pay for a hotel room in most other parts of Europe.

Top Things to Do in Durres
#1 The beaches of Durrës
The beaches of Durrës attract visitors to this coastal town. Plazhi i Durresit, located south of the harbor, spans for miles along the coastline. Most tourists flock to this over 10-kilometer beach, where an array of resorts, hotels, restaurants, and beach bars are found. These establishments primarily cater to ‘local’ tourists from Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia. The influx of international tourists in Albania is not as substantial, and Durrës is also less frequented by this group.
#2 The Amphitheater
The Roman amphitheater in Durrës is the most captivating sight in the city. It is the largest amphitheater in the Balkans.
Situated in the heart of the city, it is conveniently close to the promenade and other attractions. Unlike the well-maintained and restored theater in Rome, this ancient theater was discovered relatively late. In 1966, during construction work, the old ruins were unearthed and the semicircular theater was excavated. Admission is required to enter the theater, but you can also enjoy a nice view from the street above without a ticket.
#3 The promenade and pier of Durrës
Locals frequent the boulevard on sunny days, enjoying drinks on the terrace and taking leisurely strolls along the seaside promenade. It is a pleasant spot to relax, observe people, visit a playground, and have a drink. Don’t miss the picturesque pier for a view of the city skyline. Additionally, the promenade is adorned with numerous statues, showcasing the abundance of modern art in Durrës.
We highly recommend Kreperia Hen1 as a great spot for snacks and drinks. At an affordable price of 200 to 400 lek (approximately €1.50 to €3.50), you can indulge in tasty filled crepes, both savory and sweet. We have visited this place multiple times due to their exceptional quality. We particularly recommend trying the nutella strawberry and bounty crepes. The restaurant is favored by locals, and its terrace is consistently occupied.
#4 The Venetian Tower
The Venetian Tower in Durrës is a unique attraction that was once part of the city’s defenses. It remains connected to the remnants of the city walls. Due to its construction during the Venetian period, it is commonly referred to as the Venetian Tower. This well-preserved structure was also undergoing renovations during our visit. It boasts a magnificent terrace, offering a delightful spot for enjoying a drink in Durrës.
#5 The old castle of Durrës
Adjacent to the Venetian Tower, Durrës used to have a fortress to safeguard its historic district. The remains and ancient city walls are still present within the city center. A slender park lines the old fortress and city walls, where an additional historic tower with battlements can be observed. Two entrances offer passage through the walls. One of these entrances provides direct access to the amphitheater, making a brief stroll past Durrës Castle an undeniable inclusion in your city exploration.
#6 Modern art in the streets
Durrës combines ancient history with Roman ruins and modern high-rise buildings. Amidst these contrasts, you will discover a captivating modern touch through the abundance of contemporary art adorning the streets.
We mentioned the statues on the boulevard, including modern works of art like Mick Jagger. At the end of the boulevard, there is a modern sculpture of a headless woman – the Sphinx – and a statue of a fisherman.
On a roundabout, there is a huge sculpture with a modern Neptune on top, and next to it, a pedestrian bridge is covered by a special creation.
In the main square in front of the Grand Mosque, there is a metal-colored column that appears to ‘melt’ into the ground and traces the entire square, extending through the fountains.
These kinds of creations can be found in many places in Durrës, adding vibrancy to the city’s streetscape, which we really appreciated.
#7 The Great Mosque
Adjacent to the amphitheater and located on the main square is the Great Mosque of Durrës. As most Albanians are Muslim, the country boasts numerous elegant mosques, many of which have been constructed in recent times. However, Durrës has a mosque that dates back to the sixteenth century: the Fatih Mosque. Unfortunately, it lacks visual appeal and uniqueness.
In contrast, the Great Mosque, constructed in 1931, is truly remarkable. Its captivating pale yellow design is situated on a slightly elevated terrain, providing panoramic vistas of the city.
#8 The covered market hall
Durrës has a hidden gem – the covered market hall. Situated a little away from the city center, it offers a unique experience of local life. The market hall is bustling in the morning with numerous stalls selling fresh produce and local delicacies. It serves as a significant shopping destination for the locals and provides tourists with the opportunity to explore the variety of seasonal items available, like the abundance of pomegranates we encountered during our visit.
While in this part of town, visit Antigua for a great cup of coffee. It may not be a trendy coffee bar like those in Tirana, but they serve excellent coffee.
#9 The Roman and Byzantine Ruins
Besides the amphitheater, the Romans also left other remnants in Durrës. Roman and Byzantine ruins are scattered throughout the city, providing a glimpse into Durrës’ extensive history. The ruins of the old forum and the thermal baths can be found north of the main town square. Clear signs will guide you to these locations, ensuring you don’t overlook them.
#10 Villa of King Zog
Perched atop a hill near Durrës’ city center, the magnificent villa constructed by Albanian monarch, Zog, endures to this day. Amidst the cityscape, it unmistakably commands attention with its elevated position. Serving as the king’s summer palace, this regal retreat was established in the 1930s. However, its use was curtailed for an extended period when a rigid communist regime supplanted King Zog.
