We are fortunate to live in what might be the best coffee city of the Netherlands. Rotterdam is a city where many big Dutch roasters and coffee brands have started. For coffee lovers, Rotterdam is really a mecca of options and flavors. We listed our 16 favorite coffee bars and roasters in Rotterdam: these are the best spots for coffee in Rotterdam!
Best coffee in Rotterdam: 16 best local coffee bars and roasters
#1 Hoofdkantoor Man Met Bril Koffie
When you think of coffee in Rotterdam, you think of Man Met Bril. ‘Het Hoofdkantoor’ is a famous place in Rotterdam, partly because it was voted the best coffee bar in the Netherlands by the AD in 2015. There is no arguing about the quality: here you drink really, really good coffee. I personally find both the price and the hipster level to be on the high side. But if you are served coffee in Rotterdam from this roaster, you can be sure you will enjoy it.
#2 Stielman Koffiebranders
Located at the best location of all burners: the Fenix Food Factory at Katendrecht. If you are south of the Maas, this is your choice for pleasure. Stielman also offers a coffee subscription. You get freshly roasted beans on the doormat every two weeks. Fun fact: Stielman coffee is used in the Cape Jelle from Kaapse Brouwers. No wonder this beer tastes so good!
Tip: My personal favorite coffee brand Shokunin is a subbrand of Stielman. Definitely try to to collect a bag of Shokunin when you are there!
#3 Heilige Boontjes
The unique concept of Heilige Boontjes alone is a reason to buy black gold here: they help underprivileged young people to reintegrate into society. In addition, this coffee is also one of the best in Rotterdam. Although Heilige Boontjes once started on Burgemeester Meineszplein, they now also have a prime location in the center: an old police station on Eendrachtsplein! The atmosphere is nice, the location is good, the coffee is great.
#4 Hopper Coffee & Roastery
With two great locations, Hopper Coffee is an unmissable roaster in Rotterdam, and one of my favorites. Hopper has been straightforwardly tasty coffee since 2010, little fuss. In addition to coffee, Hopper also excels in bread, especially sourdough bread. When I get beans at their branch in the Zwaanhals, I often also order a sandwich!
#5 Giraffe Coffee Roasters
My favourite. Drinking a Giraffe coffee is always a dream coming true. This burner does not have its own bar, but fortunately it is served in many places in Rotterdam. The beans are also sold in different places, or else via their webshop giraffecoffee.nl.
Tip: Giraffe coffee is served at Local 1 st class coffee (Raampoortstraat 34b), Urban Espresso Bar West (Nieuwe Binnenweg 263) and Nine Bar (Botersloot 44A).
Located in BlueCity, in old Tropicana, Aloha is an experience in itself both inside and out on the terrace. In BlueCity everything is circular and so is the coffee from the Aloha bar. This means that everything is (re) used, including waste. For example, ice tea is made from the skin of the coffee bean and the coffee grounds go to RotterZwam to grow mushrooms. The coffee is carefully selected and roasted by Aloha herself.
#7 Nine Bar
The name shows it all: this bar is all about good espresso. The sleek bar with a lovely terrace is located just off the Pannekoekstraat, making it the perfect location to relax when you’re in the center of Rotterdam. In addition to delicious coffee, breakfast and lunch are also recommended here!
Caffé Booon was recently taken over by a new owner and completely revamped. Although the café has an Italian slant, the single-origin coffee is roasted by the owner himself. As this cafe itself says: “Coffee is a balm for the heart and mind”. # 9 UEB West
#9 UEB West
UEB West is short for Urban Espresso Bar West. That way you immediately know what is served here and where you can find this coffee bar. This coffee bar with Australian roots has long been a regular part of Rotterdam. Everyone now knows how to find this place. I personally enjoy staying here, possibly with a newspaper or a laptop.
#10 Harvest Coffee Brewers
Harvest Coffee Brewers stands high above all coffee spots in Rotterdam. When I find the chance, I drink my coffee here. The atmosphere is relaxed, the owners and service friendly, the coffee of the highest level and the food finishes it off. You can choose between different coffee beans and owners Zjevaun & Loes regularly organize cuping evenings for real coffee tasters.
Tip: go on a sunny day and take a seat at the back on the terrace with a view of the Leuvehaven.
Bicycles and coffee are now a hip combination. But even before this was so hip, Rotterdam already had Coppi. This special shop is located in the Hofbogen, on which the railway to The Hague used to run. At Coppi you drink coffee or have your bicycle repaired. But preferably at the same time, of course.
#12 Joy Espresso & More
Not far from the famous Cube Houses, Joy offers top quality coffee. Coffee lovers can choose from several types of beans here. But there is also an extensive selection for tea fans. Owner Joyce was mainly a tea fan herself, until she once followed a barista course. The coffee box grabbed her so that coffee spot Joy was the result.
Deliplein mainly has restaurants for the evening, but Kate is open all day long for breakfast, lunch or coffee. Kate serves top quality coffee, sells food in a colorful food market and serves breakfast and lunch. The coffee is from that other big favorite we mentioned earlier: Hopper. The cakes are also really tasty, so take some sweets with your coffee.
The relatively new Mecca calls itself both a coffee bar and wine bar. We think this is a somewhat curious combination, but fortunately the coffee is great. You can choose from several types of beans and you can indicate how your cup of coffee should be made. For the tea drinkers it is also nice to hear that that choice is also huge and that only top quality is served.
#15 Breakfast in Rotterdam HQ
The name of this breakfast spot leaves nothing to be guessed by: owners Ilse and Phuong serve all day breakfast here. This of course requires a good cup of coffee, so the ladies have their own Breakfast in Rotterdam HQ coffee beans made by the famous Zeeland barista and coffee roaster Rob Clarijs. Are you a total fan? Then immediately buy a bag of beans for at home. This not only applies to the beans, but also to the interior. You will find the shop between the retro interiors and cactus jungle of the home furnishings store ‘Spullen voor in je Huis’ in Blijdorp. Everything is for sale, including the chair on which you sit and the table from which you eat.
#16 Noc Noc
Noc Noc stands for Not Only Coffee, No Ordinary Coffee. In other words: there is a choice of all kinds of beans and different brewing methods, but the menu also has all kinds of fine lunch dishes. And all in a delicious coffee bar with industrial interior and large windows in the center of Centrum. The atmosphere is always relaxed, so this living room is often filled with flex workers and their laptops.
