The most creative hotel in the city is within walking distance of Amsterdam Central Station. Hotel The Exchange offers fashion design rooms in the heart of Amsterdam. We were invited to spend a night in our capital to try this unique and cool concept.
You would almost walk past it without noticing: a narrow door next to Stock Café is the entrance to Hotel The Exchange. But behind that mini door is a large hotel. It has more than 60 rooms spread over three buildings. Every room is unique and decorated by students of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI).
The design rooms are, depending on size and luxury, classified with stars. We are staying in a room with 3 stars, so on approximately 15 m² and with a huge king size bed. We ourselves live in a tiny house of 19 m², so hotel rooms easily feel luxurious to us. The Exchange has the same effect with this huge, comfortable bed that is placed in the middle of our room no. 322. It is not entirely practical though, as walking around the bed is a bit tight. The separate toilet is also a bit too tight, so the door cannot close if someone is in there.
The design of our room is subtle and clean: the walls are light gray and decorated with crumpled papers. There are large light bulbs with soft yellow and orange light hanging as night lamps. We are big fans of the spacious bathroom with beautiful design tiles.

We start the morning with a breakfast at the downstairs Stock Café. After a night of sleep at The Exchange, it is obvious to guests that the two are part of the same concept. For example, while enjoying our breakfast with coffee or tea and toasties, we sit right next those beautiful design tiles on the wall again. Then it’s time to get out the hotel to enjoy the city, as we are of course in the heart of Amsterdam for a reason.
