Sweets Hotel: sleeping in a unique bridge house

Amsterdam is famous for its beautiful canals, so what could be more fun than spending the night on the water? Sweets Hotel offers this option in its bridge houses spread throughout the city. With these tiny houses spread over all neighborhoods of Amsterdam, Sweets Hotel is the smallest, but also largest hotel in the city. We were allowed to stay overnight and fell in love with this unique concept.

When the bridges of Amsterdam were automated, the usefulness of the characteristic bridge houses in the city disappeared. The initiators of Sweets Hotel saw their chance to transform each of these special, historic buildings into hotel rooms. The cottages are all unique. Each house has a custom interior, each house has its own view of the water and each house shows a different part of Amsterdam. A kind of cross between a tiny house and a design hotel.

Our sleepover at Sweets Hotel started with a hard choice: which cottage did we prefer? We looked at all 28 and eventually opted for bridge keeper house 301 Westerdoksbrug. The colorful decor and the view of the IJ were the deciding factors for us. We received our check-in instructions for our cottage in advance by email, as this hotel has no reception, lobby or restaurant. You have to check yourself in.

Our house fulfilled all expectations. Via a spiral staircase you descend to the pink bathroom in the basement or rise to the bedroom upstairs. High above street level and with windows everywhere we had a great view of the city in the city, while nobody seemed to see us above. We felt hidden in Amsterdam.

The view over the IJ was fantastic, especially in the morning with the rising sun. And all from your comfortable bed. Heavy pink curtains hung around that bed as a counterpart to the otherwise somewhat cool colors and materials. Those pink curtains kept us warm in the winter night, because the air conditioning / heater is also very cleverly installed within the curtains. However, we still found it quite fresh in the poorly insulated house, so take your warm pajamas with you when you come in winter.

Our bridge house was a wonderful hide away for us to retreat, even though it was not really an oasis of peace. Hence the earplugs by the bed. The house, which is inconspicuous in the street scene, is a unique hiding place in otherwise grand Amsterdam. And that is exactly why we are so in love with this great concept and what makes Sweets Hotel so unique.
