In the town of San Ignacio in the far west of Belize, near the border with Guatemala and in the Maya Mountains is one of the most beautiful hotels in the country. Ka’ana Resort’s tropical gardens and atmospheric casitas form a green oasis of tranquility. It was the perfect home during our time in the Cayo region!
Resorts in Europe often are large-scale all-inclusive hotels on the Mediterranean. Ka’ana is of a completely different category. This small-scale luxury hotel has only 17 rooms and they are all equally beautiful. The rooms can be found in beautiful hacienda-style casitas and buildings. So with natural materials, a private patio, local art and high ceilings.
The big eyecatcher is the tropical garden. The exotic plants and trees form a shady and green oasis. Including beautiful – and very refreshing – pool. When we see cute rocking benches hanging in trees, we are immediately in love. And all that green is perhaps best appreciated by us, since we recently also moved to a place with an overdose of green. So in this tropical and idyllic version of it, we feel at home.
Tip: The resort is a few minutes’ drive from Xunantunich, whose large temple is still the highest structure in all of Belize. A must visit in Belize!
Part of the gardens is also the organic garden in the back of the complex. Ask the gardener for a tour and you will learn all about the local herbs and Mayan medications! We have made some notes for our own vegetable garden. We now finally know how we can compost citrus fruits (with ashes) and learned how to best germinate new plants (in eggshells).
All the goodies from the garden are of course used in the kitchen of the restaurant. Rarely did we eat as well as here! We were allowed to take care of dessert ourselves. Because every night, two campfires are lit in the gardens and you can toast marshmallows there.
You understand that everything about Ka’ana is beautiful, green and spectacular. All is taken care of to the last detail. From the friendly staff that make you feel at home. To the chef’s late night snacks in the fridge of your room. And the complementary drives to the town of San Ignacio. Ka’ana Resort is a unique place in a spectacular location. An unforgettable experience on our journey through Belize!
