Deventer is the perfect destination for an amazing weekend or day trip. The ancient city has a characteristic historic center packed with cozy hotspots. The city might even have more cozy boutiques and concept stores than our own hometown Rotterdam. You will find most shops in the lovely Walstraat and the Grote and Kleine Overstraat, but the Havenkwartier outside the center is also very much upcoming. We explored Deventer and selected the best hotspots for you for food, coffee, drinks and shopping.
# 1 Roemar Coffee Roaster
Deventer has two local roasters, of which only Roemar has its own coffee bar. So you can not only buy their delicious coffee beans here, but also have a seat with a cup of their black gold. Don’t forget to also order one of the cakes, which you can’t miss when entering this place.
# 2 Sync Ok
This is really one of our favorite spots in Deventer. We even contributed to its creation through crowdfunding! Sync Ok is all about green, sustainable and vegan. But of course without compromising on taste and quality. All dishes on the menu are vegan, for your latte you can choose from multiple vegetable milks and the ingredients are sustainable and healthy.
# 4 Holy Cow
It doesn’t get any more colorful than Holy Cow. This store in the Grote Overstraat sells endless fun gadgets. So if you’re looking for a gift, you’re in the right place anyway. I also really liked the cheerful dresses in vintage look.
# 5 Antiquarian Das Gute Ist Immer Da
We are not sure whether we can call this antique shop a hotspot. The antiquarian bookstore is not very hip, but it is highly recommended. The store is filled with dozens of antique maps. The owner proudly showed us an old map of the Netherlands from the 1930s – so without Flevoland. A gem!
# 6 Alternote
The description ‘office supplies store’ does not do justice to the cool concept of Alternote. Yes, there are also pens and office supplies for sale. But actually you will mainly find design cards and super nice notebooks here. It’s all fun.
# 7 KoffieMakerij
This coffee bar is located just outside the center and in a more upcoming part of Deventer. The hotspot can be found in the raw Havenkwartier. The owners first had a mobile coffee bar for years, but found their permanent home here last year. The cozy, but hip living room interior invites for a cup of coffee. Tea and home-made cake are also served.
# 8 Fooddock
Fooddock is the very first food court in the east of the Netherlands. This hotspot is also found in the Havenkwartier of Deventer. You will find all kinds of stalls with different dishes under one roof. From vegan food to cocktails and from African to sushi.
# 9 Piknik
Piknik calls itself a ‘summer bar’. In other words: you should be here in summer for the lovely terrace. Piknik previously provided nice summer evenings with parties and music in the Havenkwartier, but since 2019 they also have an indoor location.
# 10 De oude Mosterd Fabriek / The Old Mustard Factory
Where mustard was once produced, there is now a small covered market hall for flea and local products. That is still mustard, but we also saw fudge, sweets, sausages and other delicacies.
# 11 De Vrije Vogel
This home store on the cozy Walstraat looks a bit like a concept store. You can wander around and get inspired between stylish interior items and fun gadgets. You are in the right place for a gift here, but you might even prefer to buy something for your own home. Sebastiaan had a hard time not buying the design espresso cups.
# 12 Groote Poot
At this bakery you can not only buy bread to take away, but also have a seat. In the lunchroom you can have breakfast or lunch with a traditional sandwich.
# 13 OSCAR in de bieb / in the Library
We rarely saw such a hip library as in Deventer. And that is partly due to the nice coffee bar OSCAR. They serve made from Bocca beans, but you can also go here for lunch and drinks.
# 14 Broodbode Deventer
You will come across this well-known breakfast and lunch shop in more cities in the East. The real pearl of this Broodbode in Deventer is the enormous courtyard. The bread for the sandwiches is self-made, so it doesn’t get any fresher.
# 15 Daily Donut
It is difficult to walk passed this store and not go in. Come on; if a shop is completely devoted to donuts, then they must be good, right!? You can also go here for coffee, tea or a drink.
# 16 Hoge Ramen
Hoge Ramen is a household name in Deventer and has several buildings next to each other. At one of them you can find beautiful clothes and the other sells gadgets, bags, interior items and more.
# 17 Flotte Conceptstore
This concept store sells vintage and second-hand clothing and bags, as well as interior items. Mother and sister Charlotte and Floor – have you noticed where the name comes from yet? – opened the first concept store in Deventer. Immediately on the right you also have a coffee corner, for a nice pit stop while shopping.
# 18 DAVO Beers
For true beer lovers, DAVO is the place to have a drink. It’s really all about beer here. And that is not surprising: DAVO is not only a nice bar, but above all a brewery with its own tasting room. Cheers!
# 19 Hoentjen Creatie
Hoentjen Creatie sells special wooden products. From glasses to watches and from phone cases to lamps. This wood shop sells almost exclusively products of its own design and manufacture.
# 20 Appel & Ei Deventer
For retro and vintage clothing you have to go to Appel & Ei. The store is not your average thrift store, but a lot nicer decorated. This makes second hand shopping at Appel & Ei not only practical and sustainable, but also a lot of fun.
# 21 Bij Yo
In 2019, Yolande opened the doors of her own lunch shop in the heart of Deventer, where Brunch shop used to be. Bij Yo is a small and cozy place where it is quickly full of fun. There is also a place on the mezzanine to open your laptop and work.
# 22 No. 11 inspired by Jackies
That is quite a mouthful to say that Nr. 11 the sister belongs to Jackies, a few doors away. Where Jackies is mainly open in the evening, you can go to Nr. 11 rightly all day. So for an extensive brunch or lunch. Preferably on the nice terrace.
# 23 Tea-Rose
With more than a hundred types of tea and coffee, you know that you are in the right place for a high tea. The menu only features British dishes, so count on truly traditional options. The courtyard is a lovely place to sit when the weather is good.
# 24 A Taste of Honey
Would you come to A Taste of Honey because of the extensive tea menu or because of all those bagel options on the menu? It is difficult to choose between all the filled bagels, but fortunately the price is reasonable and you might just take a second.
