The southern tip of Belize is covered in the most stunning jungle forests and that’s where you’ll find one of the best jungle resorts in Belize: the ecolodges of Hicketee Cottages near Punta Gorda. This small-scale ecolodge offers comfortable cottages, the most friendly staff and a great jungle experience.
Jungle resort Hickatee Cottages in southern Belize
The largest town in southern Belize is the coastal town of Punta Gorda. It is located at the end of the main road through the country and from here you can cross the border with Guatemala by boat. On the outskirts of Punta Gorda is hidden in the jungle Hickatee Cottages. It’s only a 15-minute bike ride from Punta Gorda, but you’re completely in another world.
Most of the grounds of Hickatee Cottages are pure jungle. To experience that really well, easy-to-pass jungle trails have been built all over the grounds. In an hour, explore all corners and feel all tarzan or jane. A must is also a visit to the brand new butterfly farm on site. And don’t forget to look up, because there are regular howler monkeys passing by in the treetops!
Hickatee Cottages is off the grid and is largely self-sufficient. The goal is to leave a footprint as small as possible and to live as sustainably as possible. That doesn’t mean the cottages are uncomfortable. On the contrary, the showers are warm and the beds sleep lovely. Breakfast is also everything but minimal. Host Allison bakes the best bread and the most amazing banana muffins you can wish for. After being served your morning tea and coffee served on your porch.
We started our trip through Belize with an overnight stay at Allison in Punta Gorda. The mix of jungle and beach was really the perfect start for the rest of Belize. Hickatee Cottages was one of our favourite sleeping places during our trip through Central America!
