This part of Tenerife is renowned as one of the best places in Europe to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat!
Most tours depart from Puerto Colón, the marina in Costa Adeje. You can choose from short two-hour trips or longer half-day excursions. The variety of options is endless. You might opt for a larger boat with a buffet lunch and a swimming stop, or choose a smaller boat with a maximum of twelve people on board for a more intimate experience. The choice is yours, whether you prefer something lively and organized or peaceful and personal.
The chances of spotting whales or dolphins here are incredibly high. A resident pod of pilot whales, a small but fascinating species, can often be seen off the coast. Additionally, there are frequent sightings of bottlenose dolphins and other species. Sometimes, these dolphins even swim right next to the boat, making the experience all the more unforgettable.
Many tours also offer the chance to swim or snorkel in a secluded cove, adding a little more adventure to your day. Most boats provide drinks onboard, and some even offer snacks or a full lunch, making your time on the water even more enjoyable. #5 A Submarine Excursion Underwater
A submarine excursion might not be the first activity that comes to mind when planning a beach holiday, but that’s exactly what makes it such a unique and thrilling experience. In the south of Tenerife, you can board a real submarine—complete with large viewing windows, divers outside the portholes, and an incredible view of the Atlantic Ocean’s underwater world.
The adventure starts at Amarilla Harbor, located about an hour and a half from Puerto de la Cruz. From there, you’ll be transported by bus to the iconic yellow submarine Sub Fun Cinco, which boasts large windows on both sides for an unobstructed view. Once onboard, the submarine gently descends to a depth of approximately 30 meters, where it remains steady on the ocean floor.
As you gaze through the window, you’ll encounter a variety of marine life, including barracudas, trumpet fish, parrotfish, and with a bit of luck, even a majestic stingray. The underwater world here is alive with color and activity, keeping you captivated throughout the journey. While you take in the sights, you’ll also hear fascinating facts about ocean life through headphones in your language. The audio guide is available in fifteen languages, including Dutch.
The submarine adventure lasts about an hour, after which the bus will take you to Playa de las Américas. You’ll have two hours of free time to relax and unwind on the beach. Please note that children must be at least two years old to join the excursion.
#6 Barranco del Infierno
Just above the heart of Adeje begins one of southern Tenerife’s most breathtaking hiking trails: the Barranco del Infierno. While the name may sound dramatic, the hike itself is peaceful and incredibly beautiful. As you walk through this protected ravine, you’ll be surrounded by steep rock walls, lush green hillsides, and, eventually, a stunning waterfall that plunges about 200 meters into the valley below.
The trail is well-maintained and accessible for anyone in average physical condition. That said, be ready to climb around 450 meters (and descend the same amount) throughout the hike. Along the way, you’ll mostly hear the soothing sounds of birds, the wind rustling through the trees, and the occasional rush of flowing water. Unlike many other spots on Tenerife, this area remains surprisingly quiet, there are no crowds, no traffic just pure nature and spectacular views.
As this area is protected, only a limited number of visitors are allowed in each day. Reservations are essential, and you can easily secure your spot through the official website, where you can purchase a ticket for a specific time slot. Please note, children are only permitted from the age of five. When you arrive, you’ll receive a brief safety briefing, and keep in mind that sturdy hiking boots are a must flip flops or sneakers simply won’t cut it.
The entire hike takes about two to three hours, depending on your pace. The grand finale, of course, is the last stretch, where you draw closer to the waterfall and find yourself immersed in a cool, green ravine. If you’re seeking an experience that combines serenity with adventure, this hike is an absolute must especially if you want to take a break from the beaches!
#7 Montaña Chayofita
If you’re looking for a simple way to stretch your legs without committing to a strenuous hike, Montaña Chayofita is the perfect choice. This volcanic hill, located just outside Los Cristianos, offers an easy climb that doesn’t require much effort. In about 15 minutes, you’ll reach the summit no need to scramble over rocks or break a sweat.
The trail starts at the edge of town and gradually winds its way up. Along the way, you’ll enjoy scenic views of the ocean and the hotels below. Once you reach the top, you’re treated to stunning panoramic vistas: Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, the harbor of Los Cristianos, and, on clear days, even La Gomera. The view at sunset is particularly magical, as the sky transforms into hues of pink and the city starts to sparkle below.
The path is easy enough to navigate in regular sports shoes, but make sure to bring some water with you and avoid the hottest part of the day, as there is no shade along the route. Once at the top, there’s plenty of space to relax, take photos, or simply enjoy the tranquility while soaking in the breathtaking views.
#8 Scuba Diving Trip from Costa Adeje
The underwater world around Costa Adeje is incredibly vibrant and teeming with life. Thanks to its clear waters, rocky seabed, and gentle currents, it’s an ideal location for diving. You don’t have to be an experienced diver to enjoy this breathtaking environment, beginners can also safely and comfortably explore the ocean here.
Several PADI-certified dive schools are based in the area, offering a variety of diving experiences. For first-time divers, the adventure begins with a land-based briefing and a practice session in shallow water. Once you feel at ease, you’ll dive into the sea with a guide, progressing at your own pace. As you explore, you’ll glide over lava beds, rocky formations, and occasionally, a small wreck. If you’re lucky, you might even encounter sea turtles, rays, or schools of colorful tropical fish.
Already certified? You can join excursions to deeper dive sites, such as caves or volcanic tunnels. Everything is arranged for you equipment, transportation, guidance, and detailed explanations. There are also trips that combine diving and snorkeling, so even if you’re not a diver, you can still experience the incredible underwater world.

The rocks, with their warm yellowish hue, give the beach its name and create beautiful plateaus that stretch along the coast. What truly captivates visitors is the crystal-clear water, making it an ideal location for snorkeling and diving. You don’t need to go far to find yourself swimming alongside schools of colorful fish.

Beyond that, there are no facilities, and that’s part of what makes this spot so special. It’s tranquil, natural, and provides a refreshing break if you’re looking to get away from the typical tourist crowds.

A visit to Tenerife wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Teide, the highest mountain in Spain. Rising a staggering 3,715 meters above sea level, this majestic volcano dominates the island. There are several ways to experience the volcano. Many visitors rent a car or join an organized tour, but increasingly, you’ll see thrilling buggy tours through the volcanic landscape. These tours typically start early in the morning or just before sunset. The latter is particularly magical, as you ride above the clouds and watch the sun set behind them, painting the sky in fiery red hues. It’s no wonder that for many, this is the highlight of their holiday.
The drive up the mountain itself is an adventure. As you leave behind the lush green valleys, you’ll begin to enter the stark, volcanic terrain. Along the way, there are several viewpoints where you can pause to take photos or simply soak in the breathtaking scenery. Once you reach the top, you can take the cable car almost to the crater’s edge. If you’re eager to reach the very summit, you’ll need a special permit, which you must apply for online well in advance. But even without that final hike to the peak, the experience is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Paragliding above the south coast of Tenerife offers one of the most peaceful and awe-inspiring ways to see the island from a completely new perspective. You’ll be safely harnessed alongside an experienced instructor, gliding effortlessly through the air.
Most flights take off from an altitude of 800 to 1,000 meters, depending on the weather conditions. From up there, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Costa Adeje, the sparkling ocean, the rugged inland mountains, and, on clear days, you might even spot the distant island of La Gomera. While paragliding sounds thrilling, it’s far from an extreme sport. The flight is smooth and serene, with only the soft sound of the wind accompanying you as you drift above the island, taking in sights you’ve never seen before.
Each flight lasts around 15 to 20 minutes. You’ll be picked up directly from your hotel and driven to the launch site. Throughout the flight, your guide will usually capture photos and videos, which you can take home as lasting memories of your unforgettable experience.
